Superb action photographs were acquired by a nationwide search for the best work by birdwatchers in each State. Men such as Graeme Chapman, Ray Crastone, Malcolm McNaughton, K. G. Stepnell, and Len Robinson, who have published their own books of Australian bird studies, are fully represented.
Photographers include Norman Chaffer of New South Wales, I. R. McCann of Victoria, Cyril Webster of Queensland, Fred Lewitzka of South Australia, and A. G. Wells of Western Australia. All are well known in ornithological circles.
Many unusual photographs were derived from photographers who do not specialise in birds, but show their skill in the beauty and technical excellence of the shots.
The bird painters include Margo Kroyer-Pedersen and Peter Trusler, whose work has been acclaimed by ornithologists, and the famous of all: John Gould.
