cover every know species of Australian birds
The only book ever produced to illustrate all Australian birds in 'full colour action photographs and paintings'. Each bird is shown in natural surroundings. Every illustration gives clear details of colour, plumage, beaks, and other aids to recognition. The large format of the book and the sizes of illustration enable easy identification of birds.
Chosen from the finest work of 87 photographers, 6 artists
Superb action photographs were acquired by a nationwide search for the best work by birdwatchers in each State. Men such as Graeme Chapman, Ray Crastone, Malcolm McNaughton, K. G. Stepnell, and Len Robinson, who have published their own books of Australian bird studies, are fully represented.
Photographers include Norman Chaffer of New South Wales, I. R. McCann of Victoria, Cyril Webster of Queensland, Fred Lewitzka of South Australia, and A. G. Wells of Western Australia. All are well known in ornithological circles.
Many unusual photographs were derived from photographers who do not specialise in birds, but show their skill in the beauty and technical excellence of the shots.
The bird painters include Margo Kroyer-Pedersen and Peter Trusler, whose work has been acclaimed by ornithologists, and the famous of all: John Gould.
24 Habitat Photographs
The principal habitats of Australian bird families are shown clearly in this selection of photographs. They are a valuable aid to birdwatchers seeking specific species.
Organised for easy reading and rapid reference
Each family of birds is covered by a complete section of the book. This contains a general text describing the family, action illustrations of each species, and fully descriptive captions. Ready reference is made easy by the comprehensive index of common and ornithological names.
Expertly checked for accuracy
Every photograph and painting in the book was submitted to the Adelaide Ornithologists' Club for approval. The members checked each illustration for correct identification.
The most comprehensive bird illustrations for more than sixty years
The first complete collection of large format illustrations of Australian birds since Gregory Mathews' work of 191. The first ever to assemble so many action colour photographs in one volume. A delight for birdlovers and an inspiration for every lover of nature." -- Inside cover
